Golden Anniversary Celebration

Monday 27th March, 2017|Category: News

Kay and John Hughes surprised the team today with a visit to the hotel to celebrate 50 years of marriage. The couple married on 27th March 1967, exactly 50 years ago today! Kay and John fondly recall the day, saying they married on Easter Monday at St Mary’s Church in Plympton. They returned to The Duke for their Wedding Reception in The Restaurant with 40 of their closest family and friends. We visited The Restaurant so that they could reminisce and see how the room had changed over the years. We thought it would be lovely to capture an image of them underneath the magnificent chandelier which was present for their wedding day.

The couple have always been fond of the hotel and remember dancing in the ballroom when they were younger. They chose the venue for its grandeur and thought it would be a lovely place to get married. Kay had two bridesmaids, her sister June and June’s daughter Karen, who was three years old at the time. June and Karen both wore pale turquoise blue dresses, although Kay said it was not really fashionable to have a colour scheme at the time.

They brought along a photo of themselves stood at the bottom of the spiralling staircase, Kay looking beautiful in a stunning white gown and John very smart in a morning suit. We took the opportunity to recreate the photo with Kay and John holding the original photo and think you’ll agree it is very special photo and the perfect way to mark this momentous occasion. When asked what the key to a 50-year marriage was, Kay and John replied that it is all about give and take. They both agreed that they are very compatible and work well together as a couple.

Thank you so much to Kay and John for taking the time to come in and see us, we feel privileged to have met them on this special day.
