Volunteering at Plymouth Hoe Foreshore

Wednesday 23rd March, 2016|Category: News

Today, staff at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, took time out of their day to start the Make a Difference for Mayflower 400 campaign. The new initiative launched at the hotel earlier in March. The team couldn’t wait to lead the way – the railings around the Lion’s Den on Plymouth Hoe was the first project on the agenda.

Make a Difference for Mayflower 400 is a partnership between the Plymouth City Council, the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and the City Centre Company encouraging businesses to invest in their own premises and make a commitment to community spaces between now and 2020.

As a business we will be enhancing our grade II listed frontage of the hotel, this includes: the railings, the canopy, the side wall, our iconic tower and the flag poles.

For the wider city, we have committed 100 hours of team time to the public realm. Today we completed our first eight hours!

Leila (Director of Marketing), Heather (our very new Events Assistant), David (one of our Duty Managers) and Krisztian (one of our Bar Hosts) spent their morning painting the railings around the Lion’s Den and up the first flight of steps. The team bringing the morning together were Sarah Gibson from the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, Emily Bullimore, Pete Crocker, Nigel Bullimore and John Stoneman from Plymouth City Council and the City Centre Company. All armed with paint brushes the difference made during the morning was brilliant.

Councillor Ian Tuffin, Councillor Chris Penberthy and Councillor Brian Vincent lent a hand and were thrilled to see the Hoe Foreshore getting the attention it deserves.

Leila added: “It was such a fantastic morning, the sun was shining and the waterfront looked stunning. As a business it gave our team time to get to know each other out of the hotel environment, we all returned feeling positive and knowing that we had made a small difference to the waterfront that we love so much.”

This project is just the beginning of the 100 hours that The Duke of Cornwall Hotel promised during the inaugural “Make a Difference for Mayflower 400” gathering – with some interesting projects in the pipeline we are excited to be a part of making this city even more beautiful than it already is…and it’s amazing what a difference a lick of paint can make!
