Launch of the Make Campaign

Wednesday 9th March, 2016|Category: News

Make a Difference for Mayflower 400 has officially launched! With a front page headline in the Herald and our Ballroom full of like minded businesses, this new initiative got off to an excellent start.

Just four and a half years’ away in 2020, the city will host a major events calendar and welcome hoards of international visitors as we commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower. Aimed at businesses across Plymouth, this event was the launch of Plymouth’s preparations for getting the city ready for Mayflower 400.

After we (The Duke of Cornwall Hotel) refurbished the train and boat in West Hoe Fun Park the idea was to inspire other businesses in Plymouth to do the same and give back to their community. The Duke of Cornwall Hotel came up with the “Make a Difference for Mayflower 400” initiative,  in collaboration with Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and Plymouth City Centre Company, to be a “huge and transformational project” across Plymouth to get our beautiful city ready for the upcoming celebrations.

We asked businesses to come together to overhaul, spruce up or redecorate their business premises and to share in the renovations of a public space, whether that be planting flower beds in the local park, kindly donating supplies or even volunteering your time to help.

Sarah Gibson from Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said
“It is phenomenal that there is so much support already, this is about building momentum from us all working together”

Fed with a selection of canapés from our kitchen and watered with tea and coffee, the room filled with inspiring, like minded people, who can and want to make a difference to this city.

Many businesses were delighted to attend and show their support:

“It is inspiring to know that the vision for 2020 has captured so many people across all sectors, making the perfect springboard for cross sector collaboration and an event that will last far beyond 2020”

“It was great to see so many like-minded people who care and are behind this initiative already”

“Plymouth is unique and such a beautiful city, it has been amazing to see that people who can make the change attended and were inspired to help”

This is a real chance for community cohesion, bringing businesses, residents and the local authority together in a celebration of Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City.

We’re asking businesses to take up the challenge.
There are three ways that you can pledge your support:
1) Get your business ready
2) Make a pledge
3) Back your BID

The Duke of Cornwall Hotel is really looking forward to working with like minded businesses to create something BIG, with real legacy for our historic, enterprising and vibrant Waterfront city.

We would like to thank Cllr Tudor Evans and Plymouth City Council, Sarah Gibson and the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and Jon Walton from the City Centre Company for their support and dedication in bringing today’s event together.

Be proud to invest in Britain’s Ocean City, together we can make an impact for 2020 and beyond. Join us as we “Make a Difference for Mayflower 400”. We feel excited about the future and the opportunity that Mayflower 400 presents!
