Plymouth Set to Cook up a Storm for Seafood Festival

Plymouth Seafood Festival is back and is set to bring the Barbican and Sutton Harbour alive with entertainment, activities and dishes to celebrate the city’s fantastic seafood. Here are a selection of photos taken by our team during previous years.

With a line-up of top chefs preparing to showcase their culinary skills, the festival has been getting more and more popular, attracting some of the region’s best talent and most mouth-watering cuisine.

They flambé, sauté, sous-vide and quenelle their way round the event’s special Cookery Theatre throughout the weekend, being held on the Barbican and Sutton Harbour on Saturday 16 September to Sunday 17 September.

Now entering its sixth year, well known chefs from throughout the South West will be taking part, including the talented Ben Palmer from Plymouth’s famous The Greedy Goose restaurant, Dez Turland from the Saunton Sands Hotel, Tom Browning-Young from Lewtrenchard Manor and Mitch Tonks from nearby Rockfish.

The celebrity chefs will be joined by a host of other local culinary talent during cookery demonstrations throughout the weekend, all using locally sourced and sustainably caught, high quality seafood from the Plymouth Trawler Agents.

And there will be craft stands, marine conservation stalls, and a wonderful variety of food stalls for visitors to sample the delights of everything from lobster to seaweed.

New for the 2017 event is a second demonstration area at Quay Square, where visitors can watch how to pick a crab, learn about what fish is in season and where to purchase the freshest, locally caught seafood. There will also be the chance to meet local trawlermen on board their vessels, get in deep on fish anatomy with experts from the National Marine Aquarium.

The food bonanza also includes events for the little ones, from a special crabbing competition run by The Boathouse Café to the chance to join in the fun with members of CaterEd, who will be leading some hands-on cookery fun, there will also be a trail for children from the Tourist Information Centre.

On Saturday visitors will also be able to watch – or, if brave – take part in the IMechE Cardboard Boat Race at Commercial Wharf where entrants have to build a boat out of sticky tape and cardboard. The winner is the last boat to sink!

On Sunday celebrity chef Mitch Tonks will be hosting a Crab Festival at his premium seafood restaurant Rockfish at Sutton Harbour. With live music, entertainment, a stand for pots of crab cocktail, fresh crabmeat to buy and take home and of course a special menu featuring this great local shellfish.

The Sutton Harbour Ferry running from West Pier from 9.30am to 6.45pm. £1 single trip and £1.50 return. Under 5’s go free.

So, Plymouth’s Seafood Festival looks set to get the taste buds tingling and the mouth-watering over a truly scrumptious and delicious weekend.
