“I have never seen such dedication and commitment from a company to ensure a customer receives exactly what they want for their big day! We were given tasters and were able to give a description of what we wanted on our cake while sketches and notes were being taken. I felt totally confident that what they would deliver would make me speechless…and it did! With tears. The cake that was delivered on the day was simply stunning… the talk of the day!! And it tasted beautiful too. Fantastic!”

Cut Me Off A Slice, an Ivybridge based cake company, started as a small business venture between two friends with a keen passion for novelty cakes. Rachel & Lisa, both mums to two children, strategically planned to work around both parent’s full-time family lives, and the business immediately went from strength to strength. We are so proud to have teamed up with them on a several occasions!

Over the last two years and with only an online audience, Cut Me Off A Slice has become bigger and more established than either could have hoped for. Both keen cake-makers are constantly inundated with orders from all around the Devon area and beyond. Their consistent approach to high standards has ensured much repeat business and word of mouth orders.

Cut Me Off A Slice has now expanded into the wedding market; specialising in sugar flowers and bespoke cake designs. Wedding cakes are an area that both Lisa and Rachel are extremely passionate about and the company have excelled throughout 2014 & 2015. This passion has shown true having won the South West Wedding Award for Wedding Cake Designer 2015 and recently also won the Wedding Industry Award for the South West Region – Wedding Cake Designer 2016. A huge congratulations to you both!

We have partnered with Rachel and Lisa over the last year for several ventures and love working with them. Their cakes are always stunning, totally delicious and not to mention they are some of the nicest people we have met in the business!

Check out our first Hollywood Glamour stylised shoot, which the ladies supported last year. Our latest is yet to come #watchthisspace!

We sat down with one half of the fabulous duo, Rachel, to talk all things wedding cakes. Without trying to get too hungry!

Why wedding cakes?
We started our cake business in 2012 and made a lot of birthday cakes. This naturally lead onto being asked to do wedding cakes, we found that we were quite good at it and then the journey continued.

What’s your favourite flavour combination?
My personal favourite flavour cake is our carrot cake, it is super moist and tasty, and contains 1 of your 5 a day 😉 It is also a flavour that a lot of people think they ‘don’t like’ but we include this in our complimentary taster sample box that we send out to all our booked customers and it soon becomes a firm favourite.

Do you have a favourite cake you have made?
I have had quite a few favourite cakes so it is hard to pick. I really enjoy making cakes that are unique and have specific elements that our customers want. My twin sister got married at the end of April and I did a large cake table display which featured a lot of sugar flowers, macarons, biscuits and cupcakes, it was obviously a very special order for me so definitely a favourite. I also am very proud of our ‘Chalkboard’ style cake design, inspiration was taken from an invitation range designed by the super talented Steph at Silver Deer and it has been featured in a lot of magazines, because I think it’s quite a unique design.

Have you had any crazy or unique requests?
I have this week just had a request for a Lord of the Rings style wedding cake, that is pretty unique and I am a massive fan of the films!

Do you have any top tips for couples who are starting their wedding journey?
My tip for anyone starting on their wedding journey would be to shop around for suppliers and as soon as you find the ones you want book them up quickly, availability is limited with a lot of companies and you can only do so much. The good suppliers in all categories of the wedding industry get booked up fast, especially in peak wedding season.

Where does your inspiration come from?
Inspiration comes from lots of places, the main inspiration for customer cake designs is usually the flowers and the dress. When we come to design our own cakes for exhibitions we take inspiration from lots of places, current trends, dresses, invitations and what is popular in the cake industry scene, just last night I was reading to one of my children at bedtime and the images in the book has the most beautiful mix of colours, which has given me a lovely idea for a cake, inspiration comes from everywhere.

Why do you stand out as a business and what makes you special?
We have a very friendly and relaxed approach which I think just makes the process of discussing and booking your dream cake easy. A lot of the feedback that we get is that our customer service skills are great and we make the process very easy, and nothing is too much trouble. That being said we are still very professional as we pride ourselves on the successful business we have created.

What are the future plans for Cut Me Off A Slice?
Our future plans are to continue to provide amazing wedding cakes for our customers. We are extremely busy so hopefully we are able to grow our business with some more talented staff as we hate to say no to potential customers.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
We have such a passion for the work we do as enjoy every cake we make, and we hope all of our customers enjoy them on their big day as much as we do when producing them.

“We were overwhelmed with the wedding cake Lisa created for us. She translated our vision of a dream cake perfectly and not only did it look stunning and a real reflection of our wedding but it tasted phenomenal. Our guests loved all three flavours and we even kept most of it to enjoy at our family BBQ the next day…so we really got to enjoy it.”
