This Thursday, four charities will be attempting to virtually kayak from Plymouth to Roscoff (196 kilometres) in the Atrium at Drake Circus to raise money for each worthy cause.
Renowned polar explorer Antony Jinman will be visiting the kayakers at 1pm on the day to support the event, and students from Woodlands Special School will also be getting involved with the challenge too.
The charity kayak challenge is being supported by British Canoeing using three ergo kayaks that are currently on loan from the national governing body to the Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust.
The four charities taking part are The Mountbatten Centre, Shekinah, St Lukes Hospice and The Alzheimers Society, chosen by Drake Circus as its charities for the year. The virtual kayak is the first event for the four Drake Circus charities to work together and support each other.
Alex King, Mount Batten Centre Director says;
“We’re delighted to have been chosen as one of the Drake Circus charities this year. Being situated in Britain’s Ocean City we believe that it’s incredibly important that anyone, especially children, should be able to experience being on or near the water and learn new experiences including teamwork and confidence building. Whilst you won’t get wet having a go on our ergo kayaks, events such as this are a great way for us to demonstrate the wide range of activities that we do here at the Centre, whilst supporting other excellent charities in Plymouth.”
Soo Brizell, Shekinah, says:
“It is a real honour to be chosen as a Drake Circus charity this year, particularly as Shekinah is celebrating its 25th Anniversary supporting people in recovery from homelessness, poverty and addiction issues. We are a local Devon-based charity, so the opportunity to work with Drake Circus gives us a real chance to raise awareness of homelessness in Plymouth and also raise some much needed funds.The charity kayak event is fun, lively and a great opportunity to work in partnership with the other 3 remarkable charities. We hope members of the public, our supporters and the Drake Circus retailers will come out in force to support this exciting event.”
Commercial Director at St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, Mike Dukes said,
“We are grateful to Drake Circus and their retailers for supporting 4 important charities that benefit the local community in so many ways. The kayak event is not only an innovative way to raise funds but an opportunity for the team at St Luke’s to engage with shoppers and let them know about the extent of the work that our dedicated doctors and nurses deliver to ensure outstanding end of life care.”
Dania Shaw, community fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society said:
“We’re very grateful to be one of the four chosen charities. It’s fantastic to all be able to unite and raise awareness of dementia, and other good causes, whilst taking part in this unique fundraising activity. Dementia is set to become the 21st century’s biggest killer and this week, during Dementia Awareness Week (14-20 May), we’re urging everyone to come together and unite against dementia. We hope to have lots of supporters on the day to cheer everyone along.”
Greg Lumley, Drake Circus Centre Director says:
“We are delighted to be supporting four important local and national charities this year. The kayak race is an innovative and fun activity. We hope people will come along to cheer them on and be as generous as possible with donations.”
