A Splash of Purple

We are delighted to host the ‘A Splash of Purple’ Gala Charity Dinner at the hotel, with proceeds donated to the End Polio Now campaign. The following information was provided by the event organisers.

The members of Saltram Rotary invite you to their ‘Splash of Purple’ Gala Charity Dinner on Friday 3rd May at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth. Here, you will enjoy a lovely three-course dinner and be entertained by the Plymouth Ukulele players, singer Sharon Franklin and DJ Robbiemac.

This event is supported by all five of the local Plymouth Rotary Clubs, who are part of Rotary International, a service organisation which unites business and professional leaders worldwide. In 1988 the global Global Polio Eradication Initiative was formed, of which Rotary International is a member and plays a very active role.

Since this alliance was formed, more than 2.5 billion children worldwide have been immunised against polio, which has helped to reduce cases by more than 99.9% – from an estimated 350 000 in 1988 to just 29 cases in 2018. However, as long as a single child remains infected, children across all countries remain at risk, which is why fundraising to support immunisation programmes in endemic countries is vital.

Our dinner will help contribute to the ‘End Polio Now’ campaign and, thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, whatever we raise will be tripled; helping us even closer to a polio-free world. Our ‘Splash of Purple’ theme is based on the use of purple dye placed on the finger of a child to identify that they have received the lifesaving vaccine.

So, get out your dancing shoes, dare to wear as much purple as you like, and join us for Rotary’s ‘Countdown to History’. With your help, the eradication of polio from our planet, through immunisation, will join that of smallpox to become what must surely be one of the greatest health achievements of our modern age.
