Company B presents 'For the Love of Earth'

Starts: Tuesday 12th July 2016
Ends: Wednesday 13th July 2016
From: 7:30 pm

COMPANY b Dance are excited to present ‘For The Love of Earth’ at Barbican Theatre on 12 & 13 July.

For the Love of Earth will feature two evenings of thought-provoking dance theatre researched, choreographed and performed by young people who care. Both evenings will also feature performances by Dance Junction and a number of guest youth dance companies and performers including Exeter Youth Dance Company, Stoke Damerel College and Collide.

Jules Laville, Dance Director at Barbican Theatre, explains the thought process behind COMPANY b Dance’s choice of theme,

“During training sessions the company had some really earnest conversations about their concerns for the environment and some people’s ever-growing disregard for the over consumption of fossil fuels. It was clear they all had a deep connection in their passion for highlighting this through their performances. Subsequently they’ve created some incredibly moving and thought provoking dance”.

COMPANY b Dance have incorporated a number of elements into their piece; natural and man-made global warming, fracking, deforestation and the effects on air quality, melting of the polar ice caps and carbon dioxide emissions. They also want For the Love of Earth to celebrate the Earth and just how old it is – one piece sees them wishing the Earth a happy birthday and giving it 4.5billion birthday bumps!

Jules explains about other concerns COMPANY b Dance members raised as they were devising and choreographing their pieces,

“It was clear when creating the show that many members of COMPANY b felt helpless due to the sheer number of environmental issues that are highlighted on social media. How can they make a difference when so much needs to change? So as well as using their performances to highlight issues they are also making their own environmental pledges. This could be something as small as only ever buying/using recycled paper to giving up eating meat for a few days a week.”

To further their environmental commitments COMPANY b Dance are recycling costumes from previous productions and there will be no paper programmes printed for the audience. Instead information that would usually feature in the programme will feature on screens in the theatre foyer and be projected in the auditorium before the performances begin.

For the Love of Earth will be performed at Barbican Theatre on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 July, both at 7:30pm. Tickets are priced at full £8 or concession £5 (under 16s, students and over 60s).
