A Second AA Rosette for Culinary Excellence

Friday 6th October, 2017|Category: News

The gastronomic offerings of the Duke’s restaurant has been recognised with a coveted award. We are proud to receive a second AA Rosette for Culinary Excellence, following a highly favourable inspection last month.

This award is a significant accolade, making our restaurant one of only a handful of establishments in Plymouth to attain this standard. Two Rosettes are awarded only to restaurants that meet exacting criteria of innovation, technical skill and culinary judgement set by the AA. Fewer than 5% of restaurants across the UK are considered to be at a standard deserving of two Rosettes.

We have enjoyed a growing reputation as a fine dining venue in the south-west. And it’s easy to see why, with mouth-watering main courses that include the likes of stone bass with local mussels, smoked bacon, sweetcorn chowder and Maris Piper mash. Among our recent starters is a dish of chicken liver parfait, rhubarb and date chutney and toasted brioche. And for dessert, how about apricots and almond sponge, with apricot gel, almond praline and stem ginger ice cream?

We applaud our adventurous and talented kitchen team for this latest success. In particular, we congratulate our head chef Kevin Scargill and sous chef Nick Reed, the duo who drive our dining forward with ever-more ambitious and delicious cuisine. This creative pair frequently get out and about in Devon and Cornwall to meet the region’s food producers – an ongoing quest that provides not only a supply of fresh ingredients, but fresh ideas too.

As well as yielding an extra Rosette for our restaurant, the recent AA inspection brought a ratings boost for the Duke more generally. We are delighted to have been given a Silver Award in addition to our existing Three Star Hotel classification. This award recognises a superior quality within the star rating, and is based on considerations such as the standard of hospitality, service and cleanliness offered.

Our achievement of a second Rosette for our restaurant is a welcome independent acknowledgement of the passion and innovation that have gone into creating an exceptional fine dining experience here at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. The award is good news for our kitchen team, who truly deserve it. And as yet another sign of Plymouth’s flourishing repute for excellent food, it’s great news for local food lovers too.
