Dog Show, an exhibition which looks at our relationship with man’s (and woman’s) best friend, opens at Radiant Gallery on 21 July, 2016 with a special preview 5:30pm – 7:30pm.

Designed and curated by a group of nine and ten-year-old children from Plymouth and Radiant Gallery’s resident Miniature Dachshund, Beau, Dog Show is the latest in a series of shows created in collaboration with the Plymouth City Centre Company of the Year, Effervescent.

How do we relate to these animals we keep as companions, help, protection and as status symbols? This show will give you paws for thought… so come and enjoy the dogs’ tails. Sniff out the multiple works on display, including photography, drawing, installation, jewellery, sculpture and a pooch photo booth! Bring your own dog to opening night and have your photo taken with them for the Gallery wall! Then treat them to a Yappuccino in RumpusCosy afterwards. Haven’t got a four-legged friend to accompany you round the show? Take one of our four-wheeled doggies around with you. Perhaps their sharp eyes will help you find the ‘gifts’ left around the space.

Effervescent’s Creative Director, Eloïse Malone said, “I’m scrumptiously delighted to be collaborating with small children and small dogs with the beautiful joyful celebration of the relationship between people and and their furriest friends. Huge thanks to Woodside Animal Sanctuary who hosted the children in their research and loaned us their Labrador, Humphrey”.

Young curator, Laurence said “When audiences come to see Dog Show we want them to feel excited by all the art. I think it’s a really cool show. My favourite bit of work is Mitch’s Big Viv photos, because his dog is bigger than other dogs. I like that because she is the boss of every dog. I like being the boss, too.”

We’ll be showing work by Plymouth-based jeweller Harriet Bedford, Plymouth-based artist Kevin Attwood, Cornish artist Emma Saffy Wilson (who can take photos with you and your dog at the preview in her canine photo booth), Annabel Harris, Gary Wiggins, Liam Ainscough, New York photographer Mitch Boyer and Sarah Britten-Jones.

The exhibition has been co-curated by: Mr Daniel Dobrisan, Georgia Elliott, Laurence Ryan Wolton Christoforu, Leighton Pearce Stokes Adamson, Millie Staples, Chloe Summer Mai Bailey. With Effervescent Curators: Eloise Malone, Hannah Warner, Helena Slim, Ray White and Sonny Bird. Assisted by: Star Key, Beaudelaire Malone-RumpusCosy (Miniature Dachshund), and Humphrey (Golden Labrador)

Dog Show is supported by Arts Council England, Plymouth University, and Plymouth City Council and runs from Thursday 21 July – Saturday 30 September, 2016. Opening times Mon-Sat 9am – late, Sun 11am – 5pm. Families, children and dogs welcome daily, entrance free of charge. Radiant Gallery, 12 Derry’s Cross, Plymouth www.radiantspace.co.uk.
