The Duke welcomes Stewart Mandy

Thursday 26th May, 2016|Category: News
In March  we were delighted to welcome Stewart Mandy (Freelance Journalist for World Travel & Tourism at The Examiner and contributor to The Yucatan Times) to the Duke of Cornwall Hotel. He was on a mission to explore Plymouth and write about everything the city has to offer - including having a drink in every public house on the Barbican! "It was tough research, but worthwhile! I didn't actually have a drink in each pub unfortunately, but I did visit each one." We love the piece that Stewart chose to write about our grand hotel in April and he also very kindly mentioned us in his piece ...

Restoration, Walter and many rolls of Wallpaper

Friday 13th May, 2016|Category: News
Our Historical Brochure shows the many changes that the Duke has seen over the last 153 years. For 53 years Walter Combstock has played a huge part in the exterior and interior that you all see and enjoy today...we thought it was about time that we introduced you to the creative mind behind the refurbishment of the hotel. Walter, (or Wally as he is known to his friends), has been an integral part of the Duke's rich story, being part of the hotel for such a significant length of time, it has become a big part of him which is why he takes it's restoration so seriously, professionally and lovingly. We managed to sit down with him for half an hour over a cup of tea to have a natter and ...

Liberty Pearl Photography

Thursday 5th May, 2016|Category: News
“We couldn't be happier with our amazing wedding photos courtesy of Liberty Pearl Photography. Amber was a joy to work with – she is so friendly and shoots really naturally and unobtrusively. We knew that we didn't want many formal and posed pictures and Amber captured so many spontaneous moments, and the happiness of the day. As one of us (the bride) is a visual artist the look of our wedding photos were very important; Amber’s vision and distinctive style exceeded our expectations, the images are truly beautiful. Our wedding day was not that traditional and Amber understood the look and feel that we were aiming for, and translated this into her amazing images. Thank you for capturing the happiest ...

Jeanie was kind enough to take time out to come and have a cup of tea and a chat with us about her concert series. Why did you start the concert series? From the age of three I’ve always sung and from the age of five I used to always be on the stage, I love music and have always loved music. I wanted to be a singer and when I met my late husband he sang, so he came to my house, I played the piano and we sang together. ...

The City Supports Titanic Exhibition

Monday 25th April, 2016|Category: News
On the 24th April, The Duke of Cornwall Hotel played host to Nigel Voisey' s Titanic and White Star Line exhibition - highlighting the connection between Plymouth and the infamous Ship. Firstly, we have to say we were completely amazed by the number of people who arrived for the event, clearly the story is far from forgotten and this event was about keeping the memory of those who lost their lives alive. We are so thankful to you all for your support and patience on the day, it was appreciated by all of the team. The Exhibition consisted of artefacts, displays, newspaper cuttings and presentations from Nigel Voisey. It was a packed day - not ...

He will be giving presentations throughout the day to share his knowledge about this terrible event and the links to Plymouth. "When we first met with Nigel, Jon Morcom (Director) and I were captivated by his knowledge of the Titanic and the significant link to Plymouth. His information on how the Duke played her part was incredible and gave both of us a real moment thinking about how the crew had stayed at the hotel after ...

Wedding Magic at The Duke

Thursday 21st April, 2016|Category: News
The 19th of April saw The Duke collaborate with some of the amazing talent in the local area to create our latest stylised wedding shoot. Think Audrey, think 1950's...! The day was filled with creative, passionate people, who love all things weddings, joining together to create another beautiful showcase of all The Duke can offer to potential couples considering getting married at the hotel. Capturing the day we had the talented Photographer Toby Lowe and we also were delighted to have Baxter and Ted on hand to record a film on their many nifty cameras. It is always so wonderful to watch people who are passionate about what they do at work. They will do whatever it takes to get the perfect shot and they did. Predominantly based in ...
